There are five critical and distinct metrics that can be used to assess your company’s current level of materials intelligence. They are:

Accessibility

Is your materials information easily and fully accessible? If you find yourself using isolated databases or Excel files, then your data isn’t accessible. If it isn’t accessible, then it isn’t searchable or shareable and your company can find itself sitting on an untapped data gold mine. Ultimately, if you’re losing information, you’re losing your competitive edge.

Integration

Is your materials information integrated into your company’s current toolsets and processes? Whether it’s supporting simulation or ensuring accurate materials descriptions in product design, your materials information should be fully integrated.

Pedigree

Is your materials information pedigreed? Serious problems can arise when your materials data comes from multiple sources and you aren’t certain of the conditions under which it was tested or how values were arrived at. It’s important to have confidence in where the information came from, and its consistency.

Traceability

Is your materials information traceable? There will no doubt be a time when you must go back and look at a decision you made years ago. It could be that you chose a specific grade of material on a specific project, for a specific set of reasons, and now someone is questioning that decision because the project is experiencing failures. If you can’t trace those decisions and why they were made, you have no chance of solving the problems.

Compliance

Does your materials information aid compliance with regulations? Is your company proactively trying to minimize risk and be compliant with its materials information, or is there a disaster waiting to happen?

Failure to address all five of these questions can cost companies both time and money. When materials information is inaccessible or missing, you can end up repeating tests that you weren’t aware another group had already performed – and studies indicate that 20% of material tests are duplicated. It’s also estimated that 50% of results are used only once and never shared.
